Functions of smart home meters

Smart home electricity meters requirements: In October 2009, China put forward the standards of state grid smart meters enterprise, and had made a more clear requirement for smart meters. Although this year's standards are in the process of being fully revised, the basic requirements for smart meters are still clear, and it normally has the following functions.

1. Two-way power transmission and metering functions are required as the in-door interface of the power grid. On the one hand, the power grid delivers safe and high-quality power to users' electrical equipment through smart meters. On the other hand, with the wide application of new energy, many distributed new energy sources, such as wind energy and solar energy, have been fully used by users. This kind of micro-distributed energy can also be fed back into the power grid through smart meters and connected with the power grid. Therefore, it is necessary for smart meters to have two-way power transmission and metering functions. Of course, with the strong computing power support of MCU inside the smart meter, the smart meter can also conduct reliable power management, such as time-sharing management, classified management of user power consumption, maximum load control and so on. Through these managements, preferential discounts are provided for some high-energy consuming equipment to be transferred from peak hours to non-peak hours, so as to realize peak load shifting and peak load avoidance, which is able to improve the operation efficiency of the power grid and save costs for users at the same time.

This two-way communication should include two aspects to get this function. One is the two-way communication between the smart electricity meter and the user interaction terminal, and the other is the two-way communication between the smart electricity meter and the distribution network. As the connecting unit between the user terminal and the power grid, the smart meter can manage the electricity consumption of the user terminal, and the user terminal can feedback the electricity consumption to the smart meter in real time. On the side of the distribution network, the smart meter can send the electricity information to the distribution network through the communication network, and the distribution network can control the smart meter in real time through the communication network. At present, the communication between smart meters and user terminals is mainly through wireless communication methods such as WiFi. By the way, with the golden sign of "smart grid", state grid is also actively building its own exclusive power optical fiber communication network.

2. Load switch control function relies on the remote communication function. Users in different places can use the Internet or mobile communication network to realize remote switch control of various intelligent loads at home, such as air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, lighting, etc. Meanwhile, remote monitoring and alarm can be realized through the remote communication function of smart meters. Of course, up to now, there is no widely accepted definition of smart electricity meters in the world, and many concepts are not perfect or clear, which is also the reason why the enterprise standards for smart electricity meters of state grid has to be revised though has only been implemented for only more than two years. But meeting the above three requirements can be considered as a smart meter.
